Project Overview

Enclosing an Existing Covered Patio in Baton Rouge

This Baton Rouge home already had a large covered concrete patio with the roof and supporting structure in place. Instead of replacing that outdoor space, the project focused on enclosing its open perimeter with a custom-manufactured screen room system.

Southern Home Improvement Center furnished and installed a Southern Sun Room Bahama Breeze screen room measuring approximately 20 ft. × 21 ft. The new enclosure uses Dark Bronze aluminum framing around large screened wall sections while retaining the existing patio footprint and overhead cover.

The completed patio remains a naturally ventilated outdoor room. Screening creates a physical barrier that helps reduce mosquitoes, insects, leaves, and other yard debris while maintaining airflow and visibility into the backyard.

20 × 21 Foot Footprint

A Large Screen Room Designed Around the Existing Patio

At approximately 20 ft. × 21 ft., this enclosure provides about 420 square feet of patio footprint inside the screened perimeter. That gives the space enough room for multiple pieces of outdoor furniture while preserving practical circulation between the house, seating areas, doors, and yard.

The size is an important distinction on this Baton Rouge screen room project. This was not a small screen-wall replacement or a compact enclosure added beneath a new patio cover. The existing covered patio already provided a substantial outdoor area, and the screen system was custom manufactured around that footprint.

Project scope: approximately 20 ft. × 21 ft. Southern Sun Room Bahama Breeze enclosure, Dark Bronze finish, aluminum kickplate, and two doors installed around an existing covered patio.
Bahama Breeze System

Custom-Manufactured Screen Walls Instead of a One-Size Layout

Screen enclosures work best when the wall layout follows the actual patio rather than forcing the structure into predetermined dimensions. On this project, the Bahama Breeze enclosure was manufactured for the existing covered space so the framing, screened openings, lower panels, and access points could work together as one system.

Large screened sections help keep the room visually connected with the backyard. The Dark Bronze frame defines the perimeter without turning the patio into a solid-walled addition, while the screening maintains the open-air character of the original outdoor space.

Lower Wall Detail

Aluminum Kickplate for a More Durable Finished Base

An aluminum kickplate runs along the lower portion of the screen room. This creates a solid section between the concrete patio and the screened panels above.

The bottom of a screen enclosure is especially exposed to contact from patio furniture, cleaning equipment, lawn debris, splashback, and everyday traffic. Using an aluminum lower panel helps protect that area while giving the enclosure a cleaner visual transition at floor level.

Access & Layout

Two Doors for a 20×21 Screen Room

This Baton Rouge screen enclosure includes two doors. On a patio of this size, access points affect how the room functions just as much as the wall layout itself.

Two doors provide more flexibility when moving between the home, screened patio, and surrounding yard. Door placement can also influence furniture arrangement and the paths people naturally use when entertaining, carrying outdoor items, or maintaining the backyard.

For future screen room projects, the number and placement of doors should be planned around the existing house openings, yard access, patio dimensions, and intended furniture layout.

Exterior Finish

Dark Bronze Framing Against the Existing Brick Home

Dark Bronze is a prominent design feature of this installation. The darker framing works with the existing brick exterior and dark elements of the patio structure while creating a defined outline around the screened walls.

From several viewing angles, the darker frame also allows the screened openings and backyard beyond them to remain visually prominent. This is useful on a large enclosure where excessive visual weight could otherwise make the existing patio feel more closed in.

Frame color should still be chosen for the individual property. Existing brick, siding, doors, gutters, roof components, trim, and other exterior finishes all affect how an enclosure will integrate with the home.

Before & After

From an Open Covered Patio to a Defined Screened Outdoor Room

The before-and-after views make the scope particularly clear. Before the screen enclosure was installed, the home already had a covered concrete patio with furniture and usable shade, but the sides remained completely open to the yard.

The finished project keeps the same basic patio footprint and outdoor function while establishing a screened perimeter. The new aluminum walls create large screened openings, the kickplate finishes the lower section, and the doors create dedicated points of access.

This type of project can make sense when a homeowner is satisfied with an existing patio roof and slab but wants better separation from mosquitoes, insects, leaves, and other outdoor debris without converting the area into conditioned interior living space.

Planning Considerations

What Should Be Checked Before Screening an Existing Patio?

In Baton Rouge, an existing covered patio should be evaluated as a complete outdoor system before screen walls are added. The roof and slab may already define the footprint, but door circulation, runoff, drainage, lower-panel exposure, frame color, and the way wind-driven rain reaches the patio still affect the final enclosure layout. A screen room also remains a naturally ventilated outdoor space—it does not become a conditioned sunroom simply because the perimeter is enclosed.

Existing Patio Cover

Roof condition, support posts, attachment points, clearances, and the existing perimeter all affect how screen walls can be incorporated.

Concrete Footprint

The existing slab helps determine the usable dimensions, wall lines, door positions, and overall geometry of the proposed enclosure.

Door Locations

Doors should be positioned around actual traffic patterns between the house, patio furniture, backyard, walkways, and other outdoor areas.

Lower Panels

Kickplates provide a solid lower section in an area frequently exposed to furniture, cleaning, lawn debris, and normal daily contact.

Drainage

Existing roof runoff, gutters, downspouts, slab drainage, and surrounding grade should be considered before enclosure details are finalized.

Frame Finish

Frame color should be compared with the home's brick, siding, trim, doors, gutters, and other visible exterior components.
