Backyard Storage & Patio Cover Project
Framed Storage Area and Wicker Patio Cover Extension in Prairieville, LA
Southern Home Improvement Center recently completed a backyard improvement project in Prairieville, Louisiana, combining a new framed storage area with a larger covered patio extension in a Wicker finish.
Project Overview
The project started with the removal and haul-away of an existing 6 ft. x 12 ft. patio cover. After clearing the area, our crew built a new framed storage structure and installed a Southern Shademaker heavy-duty flat pan aluminum cover.
The finished project gave the homeowner a cleaner backyard layout, added storage potential, more usable covered space, and an exterior finish designed to coordinate with the home.
Project Snapshot

From a Small Cover to a More Functional Backyard Layout
This Prairieville backyard project included two connected improvements: a framed storage area and an extended aluminum cover system.
Instead of simply replacing the original 6 ft. x 12 ft. cover with another structure of the same size, the project created a more useful layout. The new design added a dedicated storage section and expanded the covered outdoor area, giving the homeowner a more practical backyard space for everyday use.
Storage Area
A new framed storage area measuring approximately 6 ft. x 12 ft. was built with pressure-treated wood framing and finished with siding to blend with the home.
Covered Patio Extension
A larger Southern Shademaker aluminum cover measuring approximately 16 ft. x 12 ft. was installed to create more usable shade and rain coverage.
Coordinated Exterior Finish
Dutch lap vinyl siding, white trim, a Wicker aluminum finish, gutters, valances, and extruded posts helped the finished structure look integrated.

Removing the Existing Patio Cover
Before the new construction could begin, the existing 6 ft. x 12 ft. patio cover was removed and hauled away.
This step cleared the area for a better backyard layout. The original cover provided limited shade, but it did not make full use of the available space. By removing it first, the project could be rebuilt around a more complete plan: storage on one side and a larger covered area extending the home’s outdoor living space.

Framing the New Storage Area
For the storage portion of the project, Southern Home Improvement Center installed 2x4 pressure-treated wood framing.
Pressure-treated framing is a practical choice for exterior backyard structures because it is better suited for areas where moisture can be a concern. In South Louisiana, homeowners deal with humidity, rain, heat, and long storm seasons, so the right framing materials and installation details matter.
The new framed storage area measures approximately 6 ft. x 12 ft. It creates a compact but useful space for keeping outdoor items more organized while preserving the main patio area for seating, grilling, and regular backyard use.
Storage Area Details
- 2x4 pressure-treated wood framing
- OSB sheathing on the exterior walls
- Housewrap underlayment beneath the siding
- 4.5-inch Dutch lap vinyl siding
- Interior OSB sheathing on two framed walls
- Openings framed for two 36-inch doors and one 36-inch by 36-inch window

Exterior Wall Construction
The exterior walls of the storage area were built with OSB sheathing, housewrap underlayment, and 4.5-inch Dutch lap vinyl siding.
The OSB sheathing provides a solid wall surface, while the housewrap underlayment adds a protective layer beneath the siding. The Dutch lap vinyl siding gives the storage section a clean, finished appearance and helps it blend with the existing home.
The result looks more integrated than a separate temporary storage enclosure. With neutral siding, white door and window trim, and a Wicker aluminum cover finish, the completed structure has a coordinated exterior appearance.

Interior OSB Sheathing
OSB sheathing was also installed on the inside of the two framed walls.
For a storage area, this creates a cleaner and more usable interior wall surface than open framing. It also gives the inside of the space a more finished feel and makes it easier for the homeowner to organize tools, outdoor items, or seasonal materials.
Framed Openings for Doors and Window
The storage area was framed for two 36-inch doors and one 36-inch by 36-inch window.
The two doors provide practical access to the storage space, while the window brings in natural light and helps the area feel less closed off. Planning these openings into the structure from the beginning helped the finished space work better for regular use.
Southern Shademaker Aluminum Cover Extension
Once the framing work was complete, Southern Home Improvement Center installed a Southern Shademaker heavy-duty flat pan aluminum cover.
The new cover measures approximately 16 ft. x 12 ft., giving the homeowner more covered space than the original 6 ft. x 12 ft. structure. This creates a more useful backyard area for shade, rain coverage, and everyday outdoor living.
Aluminum Cover Features
- Southern Shademaker heavy-duty flat pan system
- Approximately 16 ft. x 12 ft. coverage area
- Full gutter system
- Valances
- One fan beam
- 3 in. x 3 in. extruded aluminum posts
- Wicker finish
Why the Fan Beam Matters
The fan beam is a useful feature for homeowners who may want to add a ceiling fan or light fixture to make the covered area more comfortable during warm Louisiana weather.

Why This Project Makes Sense for Prairieville Homes
Many homes in Prairieville, Ascension Parish, and the surrounding Baton Rouge area have back patios that can become more useful with the right upgrades.
A small existing cover may provide some shade, but it often does not offer enough protected space for outdoor furniture, storage, or regular use. By combining a framed storage area with a larger aluminum cover system, this project gave the homeowner two practical improvements in one coordinated build.
The storage section helps reduce backyard clutter and keep outdoor items more organized. The extended covered area creates a more comfortable space for shade, rain coverage, and day-to-day use. Together, these improvements make the backyard more functional without requiring a full room addition.
Because the storage area was finished with siding, trim, doors, a window opening, and a coordinated aluminum cover system, the completed project feels more connected to the home rather than looking like a separate add-on.
Built for South Louisiana Conditions
Outdoor improvements in South Louisiana need to be planned with local conditions in mind. Prairieville homeowners deal with heat, humidity, heavy rain, and long storm seasons.
That is why material selection and installation details matter. Pressure-treated framing, housewrap underlayment, vinyl siding, aluminum components, gutter integration, and extruded aluminum posts all contribute to a more finished backyard improvement suited for the local environment.
The goal was not only to add covered square footage. The goal was to create a cleaner, more practical backyard feature that functions well and looks finished.

Finished Backyard Function
This Prairieville project turned a smaller existing patio cover area into a more complete backyard space.
The homeowner now has a framed storage area measuring approximately 6 ft. x 12 ft. and a larger 16 ft. x 12 ft. aluminum cover extension in a Wicker finish. The finished layout creates a better connection between storage and outdoor living space while keeping the design clean and practical.
For homeowners who need both storage and shade, this type of project can be an efficient way to improve the backyard without overcomplicating the layout.
