Rear Wall Vinyl Siding Project in Slidell, LA | CertainTeed Encore

This Slidell siding project focused on one rear exterior wall that needed more than new panels. Before the finished siding could go on, the existing wall build-up had to be corrected, localized damaged wood was replaced, and a new house-wrap layer was installed behind the siding.

The finished exterior uses CertainTeed Encore vinyl siding in Savannah Wicker, creating a cleaner horizontal appearance while preserving the existing fascia and soffit outside the project scope.

Project scope

What Was Completed on the Rear Exterior Wall?

The wall needed preparation before new vinyl siding could be installed cleanly. Existing horizontal boards and trim created an uneven installation plane, and localized wood deterioration was present beneath one window.

01

Removed Existing 1×4 Boards

The boards running across the rear wall were removed so the siding area could be brought back to a more consistent installation plane.

02

Removed Existing Opening Trim

Trim around the rear windows and door was removed where required for the new siding layout and finishing details.

03

Repaired Localized Wood Damage

Rotten wood siding beneath the left window was removed and replaced before the new exterior layers were installed.

04

Installed New House Wrap

A new weather-resistant layer was added behind the siding as part of the prepared wall assembly.

05

Installed CertainTeed Encore

The rear wall was finished with horizontal CertainTeed Encore vinyl siding in Savannah Wicker.

Wall preparation

Why the Existing Wall Had to Be Leveled First

Vinyl siding performs and looks best when it is installed over a smooth, consistent surface. Raised boards, uneven trim, damaged substrate, or abrupt changes in the wall plane can interfere with panel alignment and create visible irregularities in the finished elevation.

On this project, removing the existing 1×4 boards and surrounding trim allowed the rear elevation to be prepared for straight horizontal siding runs and cleaner detailing around the windows and rear door.

The finished siding is only one layer of the project.

Wall preparation, substrate condition, moisture management, flashing, trim details, and panel installation all affect the completed exterior.

Substrate repair

Repairing Damaged Wood Before Installing New Siding

Localized rotten wood was found beneath the left window. That section was addressed before the house wrap and new vinyl siding were installed.

Covering damaged material with new siding would leave the underlying problem in place. Correcting the affected area first provided a sounder surface for the new exterior assembly and allowed the siding work to proceed without concealing known deterioration.

Water management

House Wrap Behind the Vinyl Siding

Vinyl siding is an exterior cladding, not the wall's only water-management layer. Once the existing wall had been corrected and the damaged material repaired, new house wrap was installed before the siding.

This weather-resistant layer sits behind the exterior cladding and forms part of the wall assembly's strategy for managing incidental moisture that reaches behind the siding.

Prepared Substrate

The wall surface was corrected before the new exterior layers were installed.

Weather-Resistant Layer

New house wrap was installed between the prepared wall and the vinyl siding.

Opening Details

Windows and doors required clean transitions so the siding could finish consistently around each opening.

Project boundaries

Fascia & Soffit Were Not Part of This Siding Project

The scope was limited to the rear exterior wall and the preparation required for the new siding installation. The home's existing fascia and soffit were not replaced or modified as part of this project.

Keeping the scope clearly defined is useful when comparing siding projects because a one-wall installation can involve very different work from a full exterior replacement that also includes fascia, soffit, trim, or other elevations.

Partial siding replacement

Can Vinyl Siding Be Installed on Only One Exterior Wall?

Yes. A siding project does not always require replacing every elevation of the home. A single wall may be addressed when the work is driven by deterioration, previous exterior materials, remodeling, appearance, or a need to correct a specific wall assembly.

The practical question is whether the new siding can be integrated cleanly with adjacent brick, trim, windows, doors, roof transitions, soffit, fascia, and the remaining exterior materials.

This Slidell project is an example of a targeted rear-wall replacement rather than a complete whole-house siding installation.

Local siding planning

Vinyl Siding Installation in Slidell & the Northshore

For homeowners planning a larger siding replacement, the wall condition should be reviewed before material selections are finalized. Existing sheathing or siding, trim complexity, windows and doors, moisture-management details, soffit and fascia scope, and the number of elevations can all change the project.

Project questions

Slidell Vinyl Siding Project FAQ

What siding was used on this Slidell project?

The rear exterior wall was completed with CertainTeed Encore vinyl siding in Savannah Wicker.

Was the entire house resided?

No. This was a targeted project on the rear exterior wall rather than a complete whole-house siding replacement.

Why were the existing 1×4 boards removed?

The boards created wall build-up that needed to be removed so the surface could be prepared for cleaner, more consistent horizontal siding installation.

Was damaged wood found behind the existing exterior?

Localized rotten wood siding beneath the left window was removed and replaced before the new house wrap and vinyl siding were installed.

Why was house wrap installed behind the siding?

Vinyl siding is exterior cladding rather than a watertight wall layer. A weather-resistant barrier behind the siding forms part of the exterior wall's moisture-management system.

Were the fascia and soffit replaced?

No. Fascia and soffit were outside the scope of this project and remained unchanged.

Can SHIC replace siding on only one wall?

Selected single-wall or partial-elevation siding projects may be possible depending on the existing exterior, wall condition, transitions, material availability, project scope, and location.
