Certified FORTIFIED Roofing in New Orleans & Jefferson Parish, LA

Important information about grants and insurance

This page describes FORTIFIED roof construction and roofing services. References to grants, tax benefits, insurance discounts, or other financial programs are provided for general informational purposes only and should not be interpreted as a promise of eligibility, funding, reimbursement, or savings.

As of August 8, 2026, Louisiana Fortify Homes Program lottery registration is closed. The Louisiana Department of Insurance states that additional grant rounds will be announced separately.

Southern Home Improvement Center does not determine grant eligibility, select grant recipients, approve tax benefits, set insurance premiums, or guarantee that a FORTIFIED designation will produce a particular insurance discount.

A FORTIFIED Roof is more than a shingle upgrade. It is a documented roofing system built around stronger roof-deck attachment, secondary water protection, roof-edge details, qualified materials, independent evaluation, and the requirements needed for an IBHS FORTIFIED designation.

Southern Home Improvement Center installs FORTIFIED-oriented roofing systems for homeowners in New Orleans, Metairie, Kenner, Jefferson, Harahan, River Ridge, Gretna, Marrero, Harvey, and other nearby Southshore communities.

Why Consider a FORTIFIED Roof in New Orleans & Jefferson Parish?

Roofs throughout the New Orleans area are exposed to heat, humidity, intense rainfall, wind-driven water, tropical systems, and repeated weather cycles. Roof edges, decking, valleys, flashing, penetrations, and roof-to-wall connections all become important parts of the system.

The FORTIFIED Roof standard focuses on construction details intended to improve the roof system's resistance to severe weather. Instead of relying only on the visible roof covering, the process addresses the deck, secondary water protection, perimeter, attachments, openings, and documentation.

FORTIFIED is a construction and designation standard.

A roof does not become FORTIFIED simply because it uses architectural shingles, impact-resistant shingles, stronger underlayment, or upgraded fasteners. The applicable construction requirements and evaluation process must be completed for the roof to receive a designation.

Roof-system details

What a FORTIFIED Roof Installation Includes

A qualifying scope depends on the home, roof geometry, existing deck, roof covering, penetrations, low-slope sections, and the applicable FORTIFIED requirements.

01

Roof-Deck Attachment

The roof deck is evaluated and attached according to the applicable FORTIFIED requirements so the deck has a stronger connection to the structure.

02

Sealed Roof Deck

A qualifying secondary water-protection system is installed over the roof deck to help limit water entry if the primary roof covering is damaged.

03

Roof-Edge Details

Eaves, rakes, starter, drip edge, and perimeter fastening receive specific attention because roof edges are highly exposed to wind forces.

04

Flashing & Penetrations

Walls, chimneys, valleys, plumbing vents, exhaust penetrations, and other roof openings must be integrated correctly into the roof system.

05

Roof Covering

The selected shingles, metal roofing, or compatible roofing products must fit the roof design and the applicable construction requirements.

06

Independent Evaluation

A qualified FORTIFIED Evaluator documents applicable construction details and submits the required project information for designation review.

Compare the scopes

Standard Roof Replacement vs. FORTIFIED Roof

A well-built standard roof replacement and a FORTIFIED Roof are not the same project. A FORTIFIED designation requires additional planning, construction details, evaluation, and documentation.

Standard Roof Replacement

  • Removal of the existing roof covering
  • Roof-deck inspection and agreed repairs
  • Specified underlayment
  • New roof covering and accessories
  • Flashing and penetration work
  • Ventilation review
  • Cleanup and project close-out

FORTIFIED Roof Path

  • Project planned for FORTIFIED before qualifying construction begins
  • Applicable roof-deck attachment requirements
  • Qualifying sealed roof deck
  • FORTIFIED roof-edge details
  • Applicable roof-covering and fastening requirements
  • Independent evaluator documentation
  • Designation review after required documentation is completed

From inspection to designation review

Our FORTIFIED Roof Installation Process

01

Roof Evaluation

We review roof geometry, existing materials, visible deck conditions, valleys, penetrations, flashing, roof edges, low-slope sections, and ventilation considerations.

02

Written Roofing Scope

The proposal identifies the roofing system, selected materials, FORTIFIED-related construction details, optional work, and known project conditions.

03

Evaluator Coordination

The applicable independent evaluation process is coordinated before and during the qualifying roofing work so required construction details can be documented.

04

Roof Installation

The existing roofing is removed, deck conditions are reviewed, approved corrections are completed, and the specified roof system is installed.

05

Construction Documentation

Required roof details are documented during the project because many important components will no longer be visible after installation is complete.

06

Designation Review

The evaluator completes the applicable verification and documentation process for submission and FORTIFIED designation review.

Do not wait until the roof is finished to ask for FORTIFIED certification.

Important construction details must be planned and documented during the project. A completed conventional roof cannot automatically be converted into a FORTIFIED-designated roof through paperwork alone.

Roof covering options

Roofing Materials for New Orleans & Jefferson Parish Homes

The FORTIFIED designation is based on the complete roof system rather than one shingle brand. Roofing material should be selected according to roof slope, architecture, exposure, budget, product requirements, and the overall project scope.

Architectural Shingles

Architectural asphalt shingles remain a common choice for Southshore homes and can be incorporated into a properly designed FORTIFIED Roof system.

Impact-Resistant Shingles

Selected Class 3 or Class 4 shingles can be compared as an upgraded material option. Impact classification does not replace FORTIFIED roof-deck, water, edge, fastening, and documentation requirements.

Metal Roofing

Compatible metal roofing systems may be considered on appropriate roof designs when attachment, perimeter, underlayment, flashing, penetrations, and transitions are properly addressed.

Complex Southshore roof designs

Low-Slope Areas, Porches, Additions & Roof Transitions

Many New Orleans and Jefferson Parish homes include porches, rear additions, low-slope sections, intersecting roof lines, parapets, attached structures, or other areas that need different roofing materials from the main steep-slope roof.

A qualifying project may use compatible roof systems on different sections when the complete assembly is designed and documented correctly. Low-slope transitions require particular attention to drainage, termination details, flashing, and integration with adjoining roof areas.

Partial upgrades do not automatically create a FORTIFIED designation.

Changing one vulnerable roof area, adding stronger shingles, or installing a membrane on a porch does not by itself establish that the entire home meets the applicable FORTIFIED Roof requirements.

Attic and roof-system planning

Sealed Roof Decks and Attic Ventilation

A sealed roof deck is a secondary water-protection component beneath the primary roof covering. It should not be confused with sealing the attic itself.

Attic heat and moisture management depend on the design of the home, intake and exhaust ventilation, air movement, insulation, air sealing, mechanical systems, and other building conditions. Ventilation should therefore be evaluated as part of the complete roofing scope rather than treated as an automatic consequence of installing a sealed roof deck.

Project planning

Permits, HOA Requirements, Warranties & Financing

Permits & Local Requirements

Roofing permit and inspection requirements can vary by jurisdiction and project scope. Applicable New Orleans or Jefferson Parish requirements should be identified before construction begins.

HOA or Neighborhood Requirements

Some properties may have architectural or neighborhood requirements affecting roofing colors, materials, profiles, or other exterior changes. Homeowners should confirm applicable private restrictions before material orders are finalized.

Roofing Warranties

Manufacturer and workmanship terms should be reviewed separately. Coverage depends on the applicable written warranty, selected products, installation conditions, registration requirements, exclusions, and project agreement.

Financing

Financing or payment options, when available, are subject to separate application, approval, lender terms, rates, conditions, and borrower qualification. A roofing estimate does not constitute financing approval.

Separate construction from financial programs

FORTIFIED Roof Grants & Insurance in Louisiana

A FORTIFIED designation may be relevant to Louisiana grant or insurance programs, but the designation itself does not guarantee that a homeowner will receive money, reimbursement, or a particular premium reduction.

Louisiana Fortify Homes Program Registration Currently Closed

Additional grant rounds may be announced by the Louisiana Department of Insurance. Homeowners should verify the current program status before relying on LFHP funding or beginning grant-related construction.

FORTIFIED Insurance Policy-Specific Treatment

Louisiana has published FORTIFIED insurance benchmark rules, but the actual dollar effect depends on the designation, property, applicable zone, policy, insurer, renewal timing, and hurricane portion of the premium.

Do not calculate a roof budget using assumed grant or insurance savings.

Confirm LFHP status with the Louisiana Department of Insurance and ask your insurance company or agent for a policy-specific explanation before relying on a possible financial benefit.

Keep your project records

FORTIFIED Documentation for Your Records & Insurer

A FORTIFIED roofing project creates documentation that can be useful after construction. Keep the final designation and applicable construction records with your other home-improvement documents.

FORTIFIED Designation

Keep the final designation documentation available for future reference and conversations with your insurer.

Roofing Records

Retain the signed roofing agreement, invoices, product information, applicable warranties, and project documentation.

Insurance Discussions

Provide the requested FORTIFIED documentation to your insurance agent or carrier and ask the insurer to explain any applicable policy treatment.

SHIC is the roofing contractor, not the insurance carrier or public adjuster.

Southern Home Improvement Center can document visible roof conditions and the roofing work it performs. SHIC does not determine insurance coverage, calculate claim payments, set premiums, or guarantee that an insurer will provide a discount.

Roof replacement after severe weather

FORTIFIED Roof Replacement After Storm Damage

A storm-damaged or aging roof can be an opportunity to compare a conventional replacement with a FORTIFIED Roof scope before permanent roofing work begins.

The decision should start with the condition of the roof and the work the home actually needs. Grant status, insurance coverage, tax treatment, and other possible financial programs should be investigated separately rather than assumed to be part of the roof replacement.

Common homeowner questions

FORTIFIED Roofing FAQ for New Orleans & Jefferson Parish

How is a FORTIFIED Roof different from a standard roof replacement?

A FORTIFIED Roof follows additional construction, documentation, independent evaluation, and designation requirements. A conventional roof replacement does not automatically qualify for a FORTIFIED designation.

Does installing impact-resistant shingles make my roof FORTIFIED?

No. Impact-resistant shingles are one possible roofing-material option. A FORTIFIED designation depends on the complete applicable roof system and evaluation process, not one product characteristic.

Will a sealed roof deck trap moisture in my attic?

A sealed roof deck is installed as secondary water protection beneath the primary roof covering. Attic moisture depends on the overall building and ventilation conditions, so intake, exhaust, insulation, air movement, and other relevant factors should be evaluated for the specific home.

Can only one section of my roof be upgraded to FORTIFIED?

Individual roof areas may require different compatible roofing systems, especially on low-slope sections, but partial upgrades do not automatically earn a FORTIFIED Roof designation. The applicable complete roof scope must satisfy the designation requirements.

Does the FORTIFIED Evaluator issue my designation?

The independent evaluator documents and verifies applicable construction requirements and completes the required evaluation process. The project documentation is then used in the FORTIFIED designation review process.

How long does FORTIFIED designation processing take?

There is no single project timeline that applies to every home. Timing can depend on construction, evaluator scheduling, required documentation, corrections if needed, and designation processing.

Is the Louisiana Fortify Homes Program currently open?

As of August 8, 2026, LFHP lottery registration is closed. The Louisiana Department of Insurance states that future grant rounds will be announced separately. Homeowners should verify the current status before relying on grant funding.

Will a FORTIFIED Roof lower my insurance premium?

Do not assume a specific savings amount. Insurance treatment depends on the qualifying designation, property, applicable Louisiana rules, insurer, policy, renewal timing, and other underwriting factors. Ask your insurer or agent for a policy-specific calculation.

Can SHIC determine whether I qualify for a grant or insurance discount?

No. Southern Home Improvement Center provides roofing services and applicable project documentation. Grant eligibility is determined by the responsible program administrator, and insurance treatment is determined by the insurer under applicable rules and policy terms.
