Completed Outdoor Living Project · Slidell, Louisiana
Concrete Patio and Ivory Patio Cover in Slidell, LA
Southern Home Improvement Center completed this Slidell backyard project from the ground up: a new concrete patio slab, a prepared connection at the rear of the home, and a 12 ft. × 16 ft. Ivory Southern Shademaker flat-pan aluminum patio cover.
Unlike a cover installed over an existing patio, this project required the usable surface and overhead structure to be planned as one coordinated build. The result is a defined outdoor seating area with a new concrete base, shade, and an integrated gutter system.

Starting conditions
Planning the Patio Around the Home and Backyard
The rear of this Slidell home did not have a full patio slab ready for a cover. The project therefore began with the footprint: where the seating area would sit, how the new concrete would meet the existing surface at the back door, and how the aluminum structure would connect to the house.
A small rear overhang was adjusted before the cover installation. Addressing that condition early allowed the new structure to fit the rear elevation rather than forcing the patio cover around an incompatible projection.
Prepare the Layout
Confirm the slab footprint, offset, house connection, and cover dimensions.
Build the Concrete Patio
Install the new slab with the documented dowels, wire mesh, and visqueen.
Install the Patio Cover
Add the flat-pan roof, posts, gutter system, valances, and Ivory finish.

Concrete stage
A New Concrete Patio Slab with an Offset Layout
The concrete portion included an approximately 12 ft. × 12 ft. main slab and an additional 8 ft. × 4 ft. offset. That shape created a more useful transition along the back of the home than a single square pad and established the surface needed for the planned outdoor seating area.
The new concrete was doweled into the existing house slab. Wire mesh and visqueen were also included in the documented scope. These details were completed before the aluminum structure was installed, keeping the slab and cover work in the correct project sequence.

Patio cover stage
Ivory Southern Shademaker Flat-Pan Aluminum Cover
After the concrete work and rear overhang preparation were complete, SHIC installed an approximately 12 ft. × 16 ft. Southern Shademaker heavy-duty flat-pan aluminum patio cover. The Ivory finish coordinates with the light exterior of the home and keeps the structure visually consistent with the existing trim.
The completed system uses 3 in. × 3 in. extruded aluminum posts, valances, and an extruded gutter. For a Slidell backyard exposed to strong sun and frequent rain, the cover adds dependable shade while the gutter gives roof runoff a defined collection path.
- Flat-pan aluminum roof A practical non-insulated system for shade and rain coverage.
- Ivory finish A light neutral color that works naturally with the home’s exterior.
- Extruded gutter system Integrated into the front edge of the completed patio cover.
- 3 in. × 3 in. posts Extruded aluminum supports included in the verified project scope.

Completed result
A Covered Outdoor Area Built from the Ground Up
The finished project brings the concrete surface and overhead cover together as one outdoor living area. The slab provides room for seating and movement, while the 12 ft. × 16 ft. cover defines the shaded portion of the patio without enclosing the backyard.
This Slidell project is a useful example for homeowners who want a patio cover but do not yet have the right concrete surface beneath it. Coordinating the footprint, house connection, drainage components, support locations, and finish before construction creates a clearer scope than treating the slab and cover as unrelated improvements.
What to confirm when planning a similar project
- The usable patio footprint and how furniture will fit beneath the cover
- The condition and dimensions of any existing concrete
- The attachment point at the home and any overhang or fascia work
- The cover projection, post locations, and walking paths
- Gutter and downspout locations around doors, grass, and patio edges
- Whether a flat-pan or insulated patio cover better matches the comfort goal
