Project overview

What Was Installed on This Baton Rouge Patio?

This project was planned as a complete roofed screen-room system rather than screen walls added beneath an existing cover. The enclosure, roof, doors, lower panels, drainage, and future fan location were considered together as one outdoor-living project.

01

Bahama Breeze Screen Room

A custom-manufactured Southern Sun Room Bahama Breeze enclosure was built to an approximate 16 ft. × 18 ft. footprint.

02

Aluminum Kickplate

A solid aluminum lower section gives the base of the screened walls additional protection from everyday contact and debris.

03

Double-Door Access

The enclosure includes a double door to provide a wider opening between the screen room and the surrounding yard.

04

3-Inch Insulated Roof

Foam-filled insulated roof panels cover an area of approximately 20 ft. × 18 ft.

05

Full Gutter System

Gutters were incorporated into the patio roof to collect runoff and direct water away from the roof edge.

06

One Fan Beam

A fan beam was included in the roof structure to provide a planned support location for a compatible future fan or fixture, depending on the electrical scope.

Screen enclosure

Custom Bahama Breeze Screen Room — Approximately 16' × 18'

The screened enclosure was custom-manufactured for the patio rather than built around a standard one-size layout. The approximate 16 ft. × 18 ft. footprint creates a defined outdoor room while preserving screen visibility and natural airflow.

An aluminum kickplate runs along the lower portion of the enclosure. This solid base creates a more durable transition between the patio floor and screened wall sections, particularly in areas exposed to furniture, yard debris, cleaning equipment, and regular foot traffic.

The double-door configuration also makes the opening more practical when carrying patio furniture, serving items, outdoor equipment, or other larger objects between the room and backyard.

Roof system

3-Inch Foam-Filled Insulated Patio Roof

The screen room is covered by an approximately 20 ft. × 18 ft. roof built with 3-inch foam-filled insulated panels.

An insulated panel system differs from a basic single-skin aluminum patio cover because the roof assembly includes an insulating foam core between its exterior surfaces. For this project, the thicker roof system also creates a more finished ceiling appearance inside the screened room.

Approx. 20' × 18'

The roof extends beyond the approximate 16' × 18' screened footprint.

3-Inch Foam Core

The insulated panel configuration provides a different roof assembly from a basic flat-pan cover.

Wicker Finish

The lighter roof-panel finish contrasts with the Dark Bronze screen framing and trim below.

Drainage

Full Gutter System for Patio Roof Runoff

A patio-cover roof creates its own drainage area, so runoff needs a defined path. This project includes a full gutter system integrated along the roof edge.

The gutters collect water coming off the insulated roof and direct it toward the downspout instead of allowing uncontrolled runoff along the edge of the screened space.

Drainage should be planned with the roof, not added as an afterthought.

Roof dimensions, gutter placement, downspout locations, patio grade, adjacent landscaping, and the home's existing drainage conditions can all affect the final layout.

Future fixture planning

Why Include a Fan Beam in an Insulated Patio Roof?

This roof includes one fan beam. The beam creates a planned structural location where a compatible ceiling fan or other suitable fixture can be considered as part of the appropriate electrical and fixture installation.

Including the support point during construction is different from trying to determine a fixture location after the insulated roof has already been completed.

Fan beam does not necessarily mean a ceiling fan or electrical work was included.

The actual fan, wiring, controls, electrical permit requirements, and installation scope depend on the individual contract and project.

Exterior design

Wicker Roof with Dark Bronze Screen Walls, Trim & Gutters

The project uses two coordinated finishes rather than one color throughout the structure.

Roof Panels Wicker

A lighter overhead finish used across the insulated roof panels.

Screen Walls Dark Bronze

The darker framing defines the screened wall sections and openings.

Trim & Gutters Dark Bronze

Matching trim and drainage components keep the perimeter detailing visually consistent.

Before and after

From an Open Patio to a Defined Screened Outdoor Room

The finished project changes the patio without turning it into a conventional enclosed interior room. Screen walls retain airflow and views to the backyard, while the insulated roof provides overhead coverage and the enclosure establishes a defined perimeter around the space.

The before-and-after views also show why roof size and screen-room footprint are not always identical. Here, the approximate 20 ft. × 18 ft. insulated roof extends beyond the approximately 16 ft. × 18 ft. screened enclosure.

Planning your own project

What to Compare When Planning a Screen Room

A screen enclosure can be built in many different configurations. Before comparing estimates, make sure the proposals describe the same basic scope.

Existing Patio

Confirm the usable footprint, slab condition, transitions to the home, and whether new concrete work is part of the project.

Roof Type

Determine whether the enclosure will sit beneath an existing roof or receive a new flat-pan or insulated patio roof.

Screen Wall Layout

Compare wall dimensions, screen openings, lower panels, chair rail or kickplate details, and frame finish.

Door Configuration

Door quantity, width, and placement should reflect how people move between the house, patio, and yard.

Drainage

Check whether gutters, downspouts, roof overhang, discharge locations, and surrounding grade are included in the plan.

Fixture Planning

If a ceiling fan or light may be added, determine whether structural support and electrical work are included or planned separately.

Project questions

Baton Rouge Bahama Breeze Screen Room FAQ

What size was this Baton Rouge screen room?

The Bahama Breeze screen enclosure was custom-manufactured to an approximate 16 ft. × 18 ft. footprint.

What size was the insulated roof?

The foam-filled insulated roof measured approximately 20 ft. × 18 ft. and used 3-inch-thick roof panels.

What colors were used?

The insulated roof panels were finished in Wicker. The screen walls, trim, and gutters were finished in Dark Bronze.

Did the screen room include gutters?

Yes. A full gutter system was included with the insulated roof to collect and direct roof runoff.

Did this project include a ceiling fan?

The documented project scope includes one fan beam in the roof structure. A fan beam provides a planned support location, but the actual ceiling fan and electrical installation depend on the individual project scope.

Why use an aluminum kickplate?

The kickplate creates a solid lower section along the enclosure wall and helps protect the base from everyday contact, dirt, debris, and similar wear.

Can a screen room use an insulated roof instead of an existing patio cover?

Yes. This project combines a new Bahama Breeze enclosure with a separate insulated roof system. Other projects may use existing patio roofs or different patio-cover systems depending on the property and intended scope.

Can SHIC build a different size or door layout?

Screen-room dimensions and layout depend on the existing home, patio footprint, roof design, access, drainage, and project requirements. A site evaluation is needed to develop the appropriate scope.
